Hmmmmm. Gorgeous day especially after the El Niño rains had scrubbed out all the smog. You could even see the snow on the San Bernardino Mountains 90 miles away. Extra costs: We caught a few little rock cod down deep but the way San Diego like H&M Sportfishing landing operates their charters is user unfriendly. You have to rent your own pole and tackle at an extra $15 per day and keep track of it, you have to buy a Mexican fishing license and American to cross over the boundary to fish and you are charged this on top of the advertised base price for these extra basic requirements. Efficiency? When you have those newbie’s slack their line on bottom and tangle everybody around them drift fishing...you have to wait at least a half hour for the hands to untangle the huge mess instead of just cut and re tie the line and get back to fishing. this is just simple common sense to keep the customers fishing. You cannot just pick up another rod and keep fishing like most other charters outside of San Diego.. you can only use the pole you are renting. If you are not fishing...you are not catching fish period. You also have to pay for any tackle you lose on bottom including the weights even if one of the hands cuts it off your pole and ties it on someone else's rig in the confusion...at your expense. When you depart the boat you cannot keep the tackle that you paid dearly for..they cut it off your rented pole and keep it. Safety: They put the fish you catch in gunny sacks out in the sun instead of covered out of the sun and on ice like most other charters do...some of the early fish we caught went ripe. I also got punctures wounds from the rock cod spines sticking out of all the gunny sacks strapped all around the sides of the bait tank that you have to reach into. No cleaning station available for those who wanted to clean their own fish afterwards....you had to take them home and make the mess there or pay the average of &2 dollars a fish to have the hands clean them leaving the best part thrown away…the collars. We had fun but it was frustrating to see how you do not run a fishing charter compared to other places like Homer, Alaska, West Port, Washington, Port Aransas, Texas to name a few. Keep it simple, safe and fun!
