First of all, we booked a reservation for a family that was from MN visiting us in Houston-family of 4, 2 kids ages 10 and 5. Then, we decided for the value we thought we too should go! We have 1 child, a 2 year old. We booked a reservation and the first trip did not fill so we rescheduled for 2 days later, a "confirmed" trip!
We went on Aug. 19, 2009 on the 12 hour deep sea trip. YES, with a 2 year old too! Arrived at 6:30 am, boarded by 7 am. There was 70 people on our boat, with a max capacity of 105, I think. Trust me, 70 people did not seem crowded at all!
We put all our belongings on a table in the air conditioned galley area and sat outside as we took off. It was fairly bumpy so we all headed inside to eat snacks and relax until about 11 am when we were scheduled to stop to fish. Some people played cards, others board games, and a few (2) got sea sick. They sell dramamine for 1 dollar for 2 pills so we figured we better give the 2 year old a half of one and the 4 year old a half of one and one adult took 1. None of us got ill what-so-ever. Glad we had pillows because we all took a snooze and before we knew it we had arrived!
We found our rod by the number on our ticket and the deck hands ranaround to assure everyone got lines baited and knew how to drop their lines in without getting tangled in the reel called back-lashing.No nned to cast a line, just drop it in and wait for the tugs of fish. The Captain said "drop lines" and told us the count to let the line go in. Within 1 min. almost everyone had a fish on their lines, the deck hands (3 of them) ran around vigorously taking off fish and telling us what was able to be kept and they added it to our stringer. Oh, and fixing our back-lashing! We caught soooo many fish, and although Red Snapper was closed we still got to catch and release them. Some people caught HUGE Ling, Baracuda, and sooo many other fish I cant even recall the names of! We ended up with 19 keeper fish on our stringer, 3 varieties! After about 1 hour the captain had us pull up to move to another spot to catch other varieties. Then about 30 min. after that we moved again! It seemed like if the fish did not bite every 5 min. he moved us!
According to all the staff, this was a BAD day of fishing too! We were amazed! There was never even a point we could put our poles in the holders because the fish were biting so fast! The galley food was AWESOME, and amazed at the cheap prices. Hamburgers are a must try and have a conversation with galley chef Vikki, she is a sweetheart and knowledgeable! All the deck-hands were extremely nice and fast! They all love their job and even talk fondly of theboat "owner," their boss. On the ride home we were with wind, so there was no waves, it was gorgeous. People layed on the top deck and tanned, and many slept. Our two year old loved the action, the 10 year old loved his own pole and the 4 year old was just amazed! The 4 hour trips in and out to sea were gorgeous, and seemingly fast! We had 3 small coollers with us but really could have done with just a few waters per person and purchased everything else on-board!
What to bring:
4 bottles water per person, a pillow per person, towel to clean hands between baiting hook (or buy on on the boat for 1.50 and throw it away), sunscreen, cards or boardgames or dvd player/DS, a towel to lay out on if u wanna tan, and a good attitude and smile!
On the return to dock trip the deck hands clean the boat extremely well with bleach and water, as well as between fishing spots, you could eat off the floor of that boat! On the way out to sea they prep the sqid and lines for everyone, they are in constant movement for prep and are very willing to answer all questions anyone may have.
About 10 of the people on our boat were "regulars" and now we are too! We want to go once a month, and are going to try to do their tuna trip, for 30 hours (without the 2 yr old probably!).
Compared to the 450.00 half day trips some captains provide, this was by far the most fun and resonable! 12 hours seems like 4 when the fish are sooo abundant.
For a so-called, bad day of fishing, we came home with about 8 pounds of filets, that we had cleaned as we got off the boat by Mr.Mac, they charge like 1 dollar per fish and totally clean and bag your filets for you.
Hope this helps future fisherman and women! Bring kids, they will love it! It was something like 85 dollars for a fisher-rod and stringer, and 30 dollars for a rider, kids 3 and under free.
We tipped 20.00 to the deck hands at the end per family (40 dollars for our 2 families) and 10.00 for Vikki in the galley. Not too shabby for a family on a "budget."
Thanks Galveston Party Boats Inc., see you soon we hope!
We recommend this trip for those that have never been deep sea fishing, like us. Those that are avid fishers deep sea. Those that are fresh water fishers and even those that may have an interest in fishing but are not total enthusiasts!
