This was my first experience with a fishing charter so it was a learning experience. I learned what questions to ask before booking a charter. Overall, we had a good time. We caught a lot of fish, the deck hands were friendly and did their job well. The price was fair, I thought. We booked a 6 hour trip. This translates to 2 hours out, 2 hours fishing and 2 hours back. Except we had to catch the bait before the 2 hours outbound trip started. And there was a hole in the net. We spent 45 minutes in the bay trying to catch live bait before beginning our journey out to the big fish. This ate into our fishing time by ...you guessed it, 45 minutes. No apologies were offered and honestly I think the bait should have been procured/caught prior to the trip beginning. Especially when snapper will bite frozen squid just as well as anything else. The other policy of these charters is that they do not have a system to keep up with which fish is whose. So when you get back to shore, the fish is distributed "equally". I worked particularly hard during my hour and 15 minutes fishing and caught several fish beyond the two extremely large snapper I was allowed. However, I was only entitled to my "share" of the fish I caught. So "fishing as a group since everyone pays the same" didn't sit well with me or my friends. In fairness to the KAY, once we were back on shore I discovered that all of the charters pretty much have the same operating procedures unless you privately charter a boat. This is the avenue we will take next time.
